Description of the Curriculum/Course

Admission Requirements
In order to enter the corresponding Master’s Programme, students need to hold a Bachelors degree, preferably in one of the following areas: Natural Science and Chemical Engineering. In addition and a good knowledge of the English language is required.

• concepts of Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
• main environmental problems on a large scale
• main points of the development of EE and ESD and their promise of solving environmental problems
• Institutions and EE and ESD networks
• "participation" and "governance" principles.
Skills are related to the ability to
• link EE and ESD with the environment protection, the development of the natural, social, and economic sciences
• select of the appropriate ecological, chemical, economic, and social parameters in the context of implementing EE and ESD actions
• evaluate environmental changes and problems.
Competencies are referring to the ability to
• develop and implement educational programs.
• distinguish between theory and practice contexts based on natural sciences
• diffuse the principles of participation and governance
• exploite the links between environment and sustainability
Programme
- The concepts of Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Their connections with the issues of environmental protection, the developments of the natural sciences, the social and economic sciences.
- The trajectory from Stockholm (1972) to Bonn (2009) and Nagoya (2014). The UN decade for education for sustainable development (2005-2014).
- The trajectory of EE and ESD in Greece. Key points and perspectives. Institutions, national and regional EE and ESD networks (e.g. Environmental Education Centers, MEdIES Network).
- Basic ecological, chemical, economic and social concepts, and parameters necessary for the foundation and teaching of EE and ESD (principles of participation and governance).
- Environmental changes and problems. Environment and sustainability. Exemplary preparation of EE programs, theory-practice, based on Natural Sciences. Planning and evaluation of EE and ESD programs.
- Presentation of graduate students' small projects.

Relevance
The course aims to develop students’ abilities to examine and evaluate the complex links between environment and sustainable development of modern societies within an educational context, in order to become responsible citizens.
