Factual description
Professor Antonio Carlos Ferreira Batista teach several disciplines at Federal University of Uberlândia - MG-Brazil: at the undergraduate courses of Chemistry (Green Chemistry, Biomass and biofuels, experimental organic chemistry, industrial chemical processes) and Production Engineering (General chemistry), as well aa at the post-graduation level with the discipline of Principles of Green Chemistry.
In no cases he uses the theory of Complex Systems neither theories referred to Complexity Sciences, even if in its syllabi several aspects indicate the use of a System Thinking approach. In all the courses he takes in strong consideration the sustainability and the sustainable development, using the fundamental theories of Green Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, recycling, and life cycle assessment. The teaching in these courses are mainly focused on chemistry but also contains interdisciplinary elements, such as. environmental issues, energy production, wastes management, biological matters, insofar as they relate to chemistry issues. Professor Antonio Carlos Ferreira Batista stimulate system thinking trough the discussion of scientific articles characterized by multidisciplinary approach and through the organization of classes activities such as the calculation of carbon footprint, water footprint and waste management balance on some real case studies.
In order to stimulate the student’s skill in the problem solving, the teacher invite students to calculate the amount of wastes daily produced by each of them analyzing among. Panel of proposed good practices which is more effective in terms of wastes reduction. Ethical issue are approached considering the impact of all the actions on the entire society, considering environmental economical and social issues all at once.
Relevance in complex systems
The course do not directly refer to complex system theories.
Strong points
Represent a nice example in which the same teacher is responsible of a series of integrated courses in which the same issue can be efficiently approached from different point of view and with the help of different tools.
Transferability potential
the use of metrics calculations to stimulate the System Thinking Approach
