Summary
A review of technologies used in engineering education is provided in this paper. The authors analyze the state of the art and future developments of technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing, drones, internet of things, robots, artificial intelligence systems, holograms, wearable devices, virtual laboratories, and blockchain technologies. Each technology is presented by the description, current tools, examples of applications in engineering education. The benefits, drawbacks, and challenges of using the tools in the educational process are also discussed. The authors state that the mentioned technologies help students to learn in an exciting and flexible way. Moreover, they foster various competencies and skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving. On the other hand, the main challenges of using these technologies include price, ergonomics, privacy and ethical issues. Thus, the technologies should be incorporated in the educational model after careful consideration of their advantages and disadvantages.
Relevance for Complex Systems Knowledge
The authors provide a review on application of various innovative technologies in learning, such as 3D printing, artificial intelligence, robots, augmented and virtual reality, virtual laboratories and others. They conclude that these technologies enable students to learn in an exciting way and convenient time, develop innovative and creative thinking, encourage to develop problem solving skills. The discussed technologies provide students a real-world experience which helps to identify causal relationships between the different parts of systems and link theory to practice. These skills are of high importance in solving complex problems.
Point of Strength
The strength of this article is a provided detailed review on applications of technologies in learning process. The authors discuss the applications of 3D printers, augmented and virtual reality, robots, internet of things, artificial intelligence and others.
