Summary
The article considers the impact of high-tech environment for the teaching and learning outcomes. The authors define the terms of effective teaching and learning. Effective teaching is defined as the one which leads to engaged and intelligent learning. Effective learning is defined as learning which leads to using higher order cognitive functions, such as exploration, problem-solving, and others. The authors list the outcomes of effective teaching and learning, such as holistic appreciation, active knowledge, lifelong learning, critical thinking, team working skills. They also discuss the possible approaches of integrating technology to achieve the desirable learning outcomes. It is concluded that technology enables to address the limitations of conventional teaching methodologies by incorporating strategies like experiential learning. It is also possible to maintain effective teaching / learning methods which do not require technology, but technology can make the learning process more engaging and therefore effective.
Relevance for Complex Systems Knowledge
The authors state that teaching in high-tech environment encourages students to actively participate in the learning process. Although the article was published in the early age of technology, the authors stat e that the role of teacher and student was already changing and technologies were used in collaboration, team work, problem-solving, experiment simulation and other field. The authors emphasize the importance of artificial intelligence in order to develop critical thinking skills, such as interpretating results and predicting consequences, especially in cases where experiments are dangerous or have a high cost.
Point of Strength
The point of strength of this article is the provided principles on incorporating technology to the conventional teaching / learning process. Although these principles were formulated in the early applications of technology, they are still valuable to be taken under consideration.
