Summary
Green spaces in urban settings can improve their environmental conditions. In this context, green spaces originated from the fragmentation of natural habitats. Their presence can influence the functionality of a locality. Green spaces are much less widespread than peri-urban spaces and therefore require special landscaping techniques. In the present study, we focused on the development of an urban planning and landscaping plan for existing parks in Baia Mare, UE, (Mara Central Park, Park of the Monument to the Romanian Soldiers and Queen Mary Park), highlighting their key features, such as functions, landscape style, and existing structures. Specifically, we classified the vegetation into categories (deciduous trees, evergreen trees, deciduous shrubs, evergreen shrubs, hedges, annual flowering plants, and aromatic and decorative species). In doing so, we determined the amount of existing plant material and evaluated its uses. Thus, we obtained new directions for the redevelopment of the analyzed parks through another landscape process.
Relevance for Complex Systems Knowledge
The paper performs a study of three Baia Mare's parks that involved monitoring extant vegetation in the parks and classified the vegetation according to categories. Thus, the authors were able to determine the quantity of plant material and gauge its uses.
The paper describes the urban green parks as a complex system of architectural elements (the part that is built) and natural elements (design of green spaces through vegetation).
Point of Strength
The paper offers new instructions for refurbishing the parks analyzed through a process of landscaping. The paper offers an example of an urban and landscape design plan of urban parks describing their principal characteristics:
functions( recreation, cultural, transit); landscape styling (natural, geometric, mixed); the need for interventions of every vegetational element.
