Summary
This article is concerned with the analysis of how older students within the Gülen community housing system act as both role models and sympathetic guides for younger students on their spiritual maturation process. The basis of the study is focussed on educators’ pedagogical interventions through guidance and emulation, and the part this plays in younger peoples learning experience, particularly in a religious context.

Vicini introduces the study by detailing the context in which the study is based: Istanbul. He then goes on to describe the Gülen community, its origins and the schooling system. The role model and sympathetic guided relationship is based off University students to high school students. Fieldwork data collection consisted of daily conversations in the houses, asking questions on particular topics and paying attention to peoples stories as they were willing to tell. Interviews were conducted towards the end of the study with 16 high school students that the author met during the study. The interviews were structured with a set of open questions.

Vicini describes the housing situation in detail and the social relationships that occur here.
