Summary
The publication suggests theoretical ecology models as a system not only to predict spoiler vs pathogen growth dynamics in food, but also as a system to better understand results that do not fit with simplistic general models. Experiments with the pathogen E.coli O157:H7 and further analyses revealed that seemingly inconsistent results can be explained with a relative simple interaction mode.
Relevance for Complex Systems Knowledge
The paper deals with the complexity of several species and strains interacting. The tool are based on the Lotka-Volterra model
Point of Strength
Good theoretical framework. Well depicting of the situation before the massive advent of NGS and metagenomics. The final conclusion is however the strongest part: Complex models have a continuum of dynamics.
