This study is concerned with the role of consumers and producers and their role in sustainability as interacting and co-evolving actors. Recent research papers have stressed the need for applying the relevance of the consumer experience to sustainability trajectories and for a broader application of Technological Innovation Systems (TIS) to encompass this. Randelli & Rocchi the TIS framework the food industry, a low-medium technology sector where multiple “alternative” food networks (AFN) are emerging and are contributing innovation systems and moving towards sustainability. The research question is assessed in two steps: (1) develop pre-liminary meta-analysis of the literature on innovation processes to justify the use of the TIS framework and (2) application of the conceptual framework adopted in analysing the role of consumers in the dynamics of innovation.  

Randelli & Rocchi describe the theoretical framework behind the consumers and TIS, the role of consumer in the TIS, alternative food networks as technological innovation systems, the role of consumers within the functional patterns of TIS: the case of AFNs and finally deliver their concluding remarks.
